To our economic development partners:

As we continue on the path to recovery after Hurricane Sandy, I wanted to remind impacted businesses about resources available to them.

FEMA

Federal assistance has been made available through FEMA.  Governor Dannel P. Malloy announced that those affected in Fairfield, New Haven, Middlesex and New London Counties must register with FEMA by phone or online to receive aid.

      -  To register by phone, call 1-800-621-FEMA (3362).  The TTY line for people with speech or hearing disabilities is 1-800-462-7585.  The line is open from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. every day.

      -  To register online, applications may be completed at www.disasterassistance.gov.

      -  For disaster assistance questions, call the FEMA helpline at 1-800-621-3362.

State officials and FEMA are assessing damage in Litchfield, Hartford, Tolland and Windham counties to determine if they will be eligible for aid.  Residents and businesses in those counties should dial 2-1-1 or go online at www.211ct.org to report their damage.

SBA

The Small Business Administration will be offering loans to homeowners, businesses, and non-profit organizations. You can access a SBA Disaster Assistance online at www.sba.gov/disaster or call the Buffalo call center at 800-659-2955.

Finally, businesses can contact our agency about the financial and technical resources that may be available to them.  To talk to a DECD representative call 860-270-8105.

Please forward this message as you see fit, and thank you for your continued support.

YOU LIKE OUR DRIVEWAY STONE, AND YOU LIVE WHERE?

When you call a business, the first thing you expect is good service. When a business has been around for a while, you usually get it. Nothing could be truer of a call made in December to Segalla Sand & Gravel of North Canaan Connecticut.

It seems there is a new demand for their 3/8” native stone. The client for the export company was calling had seen Segallas’ stone on a driveway while visiting the Berkshires. They loved it and they had to have it on theirs. One small hurdle to cross… did I say small, the clients driveway, it’s in Israel.

Renata Segalla-Siok and her brother John Segalla conferred and told the client, “Yes, we can do this.” That was the beginning of a new International Relationship. “Providing The Ground To Build On”, the corporate motto of Segalla Sand & Gravel, would need to be revised…“Providing The Ground To Build On, Anywhere”.

Renata, spent many hours and maybe a few sleepless nights coordinating the sale. With some direction from John, she soon found herself knee-deep with International shipping requirements, mailing samples, countless phone calls and emails to put the package together. Finally, the 80 ton of stone ( that’s 160,000 ponds or approximately 4 large dump truck loads), would need to be bagged, pallet-ed / wrapped and placed in the shippers four “ Sea Containers”. The containers would then be hauled to the Port of New York to be placed on a cargo ship for their delivery to Israel, over 6000 miles away.

The sale was completed in early February and Segalla Sand & Gravel, Inc. has once again “Provided The Ground To Build On”.
